I enjoyed reading both “Learning
to Read” By Malcolm X, and “I just want to be Average” By Mike Rose. Each one
of them had their own flavor and writing style, but they both had similar objectives.
Both Malcolm X and Mike Rose wanted the reader to know where, how, and why in
their stories. They built a foundation for you to get the whole picture for the
reader as if they are watching the story rather than reading it. Both authors
wrote a small detailed of how they ended up where they were, and lastly they explained
the why they wrote the story, why they thought it was worth sharing with
everyone.
The stories
differ in the following ways; they are set in very different circumstances. One
is in prison and the other is in high school. One is learning on his own and
the other is in a not-so-formal classroom. One learns to enjoy learning and
reading, while the other started out enjoying those things and slowly started
not caring about learning or paying attention. The shift in each story is
profound, one goes from a negative outcome to a positive one and the second
goes from a positive to a negative and does a whole 360 and boom a positive.
Both Malcolm and
Mike wanted the reader to understand their personal story; they wanted to share
the struggles they saw and overcame the obstacles to achieve what they wanted. Malcolm
X and Mike Rose wanted to give each person their own inspiration and that there
is really nothing that can hold you back from doing what you want to do.
